As the date for the CPS decision on the arrest and charging of ex Det Ch Supt Dave Cook (Mr Jacqui Hames) draws near, our attention ought to focus on the tragi-comic plight of Peter Jukes and Tom Watson attempting some leverage over “new evidence” (they produce none) in the murder of Daniel Morgan. We are told that “massive corruption” was being uncovered. Not so. At the time, 1987, Morgan had a story of an overtime scam at Catford police station, hardly the stuff of Fleet Street headlines. His ex boss Bryan Madagan verified this.
The recent “revelations” are from a source which Alastair Morgan and Jukes are now eager to distance themselves from, Derek G Haslam of Downham Market, whose son P.C James A Haslam was implicated in a notorious Norfolk Police death in custody. Deputy Labour party leader Tom Watson jumped on the bandwagon, even the suicide of Alan “Taffy” Holmes was brought in to prop up a tenuous theory. Holmes was under great pressure from Derek Haslam who was forced to flee London – far from being “Serpico” Haslam was labelled “Judas rat” by his erstwhile Metropolitan Police colleagues.
Claiming to be mentally ill Haslam then moved into lucrative work passing privileged defence documents to the police and sabotaging cases. Hardly reliable, Haslam “forgets” which colour his Father was (his Dad was an unknown West Indian serviceman). Looking forward to the denouement, New Scotland Yard are facing a huge legal bill and what remains of their sullied reputation in tatters.
Mine’s a villa in Italy, same for Mr Badger.
