The fictional character of “Insp Truscott” was based on Harold Challenor. They share much with ex Det Ch Supt Dave Cook. Cook (now Imrie-Cook) headed up the investigation into the unsolved murder of Daniel Morgan of “Southern Investigations”. Whilst Truscott and Cook are comedy figures, the lengths to which Cook went, in order to fit up Jonathan Rees (Morgan’s partner at Southern) were far from funny.
Cook wishes to exculpate himself by “doing a Derek” and claiming mental illness. The thing is, as with the notorious Challenor, why wasn’t this spotted by New Scotland Yard? Why was a mentally ill Cook able to negotiate a book deal and putative film deal?
As Truscott would shout “Anything you say will be taken down and twisted about”.
