The reason why the Lawrence murder was so ineptly handled weights on the Forensic Science Services mismanagement of it, far less than notions of venal detectives.
Four senior ranks, Det Supt Ian Crampton, Det Supt Brian Weeden, Det Ch Supt William Ilsley and Det Insp Ben Bullock, faced the relentless media spotlight in the aftermath of the killing of Stephen Lawrence by elements of the far right, in Kidbrooke, London. Their exoneration now appears to be imminent.
There is a slight overlap with the Daniel Morgan murder – Det Sgt John “O.J” Davidson worked on the periphery of the Morgan case and is fondly remembered for “escorting” Det Con Haslam from an Xmas party after the half Jamaican Haslam refused to leave an attractive married WPC alone. Davidson also gave Haslam grief over turning up to the CID whilst on a one year punishment, following Haslam causing death by drink driving of an elderly pedestrian, (fined £60, Horseferry’s Magistrates).
Examining at the Lawrence case, another facet emerges, that of infiltration. Peter Francis sabotaged the Lawrence family campaign for justice from within, as did Haslam with the Morgan family campaign.
Will Channel 4 and Bruce Goodison look into this for “Collapse”, tipped as a PR exercise to clean up ex Det Ch Supt Dave Cook?
“Indefinite films” would do well to see how the Kim James case became a miscarriage of justice.
